(이스탄불=연합뉴스) 김승욱 특파원 = 이슬람권 최대 명절인 이드 알 아드하(희생제)를 맞아 터키의 무슬림(이슬람 신자)들이 최근 모스크로 변경된 성소피아(터키어 아야 소피아·그리스어 하기아 소피아)에 운집했다.

터키 종교청인 디야네트는 희생제 첫날인 31일 성소피아 그랜드 모스크에서 특별 아침 예배를 열었다.

이날 예배는 알리 에르바스 종교청장이 집전했으며, 무스타파 센토프 국회의장, 알리 카라이스마일로을루 교통인프라부 장관, 알리 예르리카야 이스탄불 주지사 등이 참석했다.

터키 현지 언론은 전국에서 온 독실한 신자 수천 명이 성소피아 내부는 물론 외부를 가득 채웠다고 전했다.

무슬림들은 성화와 모자이크를 천으로 가리고 바닥에 녹색 카펫을 깐 성소피아 내부에 모여 앉아 예배에 참여했다.

성소피아 내부에 들어가지 못한 무슬림들은 성소피아와 술탄 아흐메트 모스크(블루 모스크) 사이 광장에 모여 각자 가지고 온 카펫을 깔고 앉아 예배를 올렸다.

터키 당국은 이날 예배에 앞서 성소피아 내부를 소독하는 등 방역에 힘을 기울였다.

그러나 일각에서는 신종 코로나바이러스 감염증(코로나19)이 대유행하는 가운데 수천 명이 밀집한 것을 두고 코로나19 확산을 우려하는 목소리가 제기됐다.

이날까지 집계된 터키의 코로나19 확진자 수는 22만9천891명, 누적 사망자수는 5천674명이다. 지난 24시간 동안 추가된 확진자 수는 967명으로 파악됐다.

이슬람력으로 12월 10일부터 시작되는 이드 알 아드하는 선지자 아브라함이 아들을 제물로 바치려 하자 신이 아들 대신 양을 제물로 바치게 했다는 일화에서 유래한 축제다.

이드 알 아드하 기간 이슬람 신자들은 소·양·염소를 제물로 도축하고 고기를 이웃이나 소외층과 나눈다.

동로마제국 황제 유스티니아누스 1세가 537년 건립한 성소피아 대성당은 916년간 정교회의 총본산이었으나, 1453년 오스만 제국이 콘스탄티노플을 점령하면서 오스만 황실 모스크로 개조됐다.

세계 1차대전으로 오스만 제국이 멸망한 후 터키 공화국의 초대 대통령이 된 무스타파 케말 아타튀르크는 강력한 세속주의를 앞세워 1934년 내각회의에서 성소피아를 박물관으로 전환하기로 결정했으며, 이듬해인 1935년 성소피아 박물관이 개장했다.

이후 성소피아는 연간 약 400만명의 관광객이 방문하는 터키 최대의 관광 명소가 됐으며, 성소피아가 속한 '이스탄불 역사지구'는 유네스코(UNESCO·유엔교육과학문화기구)의 세계유산으로 등재됐다.

그러나 2000년대 이후 이슬람주의를 앞세운 정의개발당 소속 레제프 타이이프 에르도안 대통령의 집권이 이어지면서 성소피아를 다시 모스크로 전환하자는 목소리가 커졌다.

이에 터키 최고행정법원은 지난달 성소피아의 지위 변경 안건에 대한 심의에 착수했으며, 지난 10일 성소피아의 박물관 지위를 취소한다고 결정했다.

에르도안 대통령은 그 즉시 성소피아를 모스크로 개조하라는 행정명령에 서명했으며, 종교청은 지난 24일 성소피아에서 첫 금요예배를 열었다.
