(서울=연합뉴스) 현혜란 기자 = 존 볼턴 전 미국 백악관 국가안보보좌관은 19일(현지시간) 도널드 트럼프 행정부의 주한미군 감축 움직임을 비판했다.

볼턴 전 보좌관은 이날 트위터에 '한국에서 트럼프 철수?'라는 제목의 월스트리트저널(WSJ) 사설을 링크하며 "철수하는 미국은 다시 위대해질 수 없다"고 적었다.

볼턴 전 보좌관은 "한국과 독일에서의 병력을 철수하는 것은 독재 정부에 잘못된 메시지를 보내는 것이자 가까운 동맹국을 버리는 일"이라고 지적했다.

앞서 WSJ은 17일 국방부가 지난 3월 백악관에 주한미군 감축 옵션을 제시했다고 보도했고, 이어진 이튿날 사설에서 트럼프 대통령이 아프가니스탄, 독일, 한국에서 미군 병력 철수를 압박했다는 소식을 전했다.

이에 대해 주한미군 특전사령부 작전참모 출신 데이비드 맥스웰 민주주의수호재단(FDD) 선임연구원도 이날 미국 군사 전문 매체 밀리터리타임스에 기고한 글에서 주한미군 철수의 문제점을 지적했다.

인력과 각종 군 장비를 돌려보내고 환경영향평가를 마치기까지 엄청나게 많은 시간과 비용이 들어갈 텐데 계산기를 두드려보면 경제적 측면과 안보적 측면에서 모두 수지가 맞지 않는다는 것이다.

한국에 주둔 중인 미군 2만8천500명을 어디로 배치할지도 국방부가 당면한 과제다. 만약 한국뿐만 아니라 독일, 일본에서도 미군을 철수한다면 방정식은 더욱 복잡해진다고 맥스웰 연구원은 우려했다.

맥스웰 연구원은 "동북아에서 핵심축 동맹을 뒷받침하는 것은 공동의 관심이자 공동의 가치"라며 "한국에서 미군을 빼낸다면 미국의 국가안보 이익도 사라진다"고 경고했다.

미국 정부가 주한미군 감축을 고려하고 있다는 언론 보도가 나오자 야당인 민주당뿐만 아니라 트럼프 대통령이 속한 공화당에서도 이를 비판하는 목소리가 나오고 있다.

공화당 벤 새스 상원의원은 "전략적 무능"이라 비판했고, 같은 당 마크 그린 하원의원은 "그 어느 때보다 우리는 한국과 협력해야 한다. 우리는 그들이 필요하고, 그들도 우리가 필요하다"며 주한미군의 필요성을 강조했다.

민주당 소속 애덤 스미스 하원 군사위원장은 "미국이 세계 평화와 안정에 막대한 투자를 하고 있기 때문에 한국에 있는 것"이라고 강조했다.
